QUANTUM MATERIALS

Quantum materials are substances whose properties are governed by quantum mechanics at macroscopic scales. In these materials, interactions between electrons, spin, and topology produce collective phenomena such as superconductivity, topological surface states, quantum magnetism, and unusual metal–insulator transitions.

Their behavior cannot be explained by classical physics alone and often arises from strong correlations or spin–orbit coupling, enabling novel electronic and photonic functionalities.

APPLICATIONS

One of the most prominent applications of quantum materials are in quantum computing, where superconductors and spin systems form qubits, but they also enable ultra-efficient electronics with low energy loss and support advanced spintronic memory devices. In energy systems, superconductors allow lossless power transmission and strong magnets for MRI and fusion.

Quantum materials are equally used in precision sensors, secure quantum communication, and next-generation photonic and flexible electronic technologies.

CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE

The Centre of Excellence in Quantum Materials builds on the strong foundations in Finland on research in quantum physics and technology, low-temperature physics, nanoscience and photonics, laid by decades of commitment into basic research in these fields.

It brings together physicists, materials scientists, and engineers to design, synthesize and study quantum systems such as topological insulators, superconductors and 2D materials. The centre develops new materials and technologies for future quantum computing, sensing and communications, and strengthens Finland’s capabilities in quantum science through collaboration, education and cutting-edge experimental infrastructure.

The centre aims to deepen understanding of quantum phenomena and enable future technologies in electronics, sensing and quantum information science.
