Figure from the paper “Nonlocal Majorana polarization in non-Hermitian topological superconductors”

Majorana zero modes in topological superconductors are sought for robust quantum bits, and the 'nonlocal Majorana polarisation' has proved a reliable indicator of their presence and quality. Oladunjoye Awoga of QMAT's Condensed Matter Theory group at the University of Jyväskylä, with Arjun Kumar (Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai) and Jorge Cayao (Uppsala University), extends this indicator to non-Hermitian systems, which exchange energy or particles with their surroundings.

Using biorthogonal eigenstates, they show that it can distinguish Majorana zero modes from trivial zero-energy states and from exceptional points. They also introduce a sensitivity measure for the contribution of non-Hermiticity, and find that non-Hermiticity enhances the robustness of Majorana zero modes.
